Fossilized ammonites are most commonly traced back to the lower Jurrasic and Cretaceous time period, when the ancient oceans were teeming with cephelapod life forms, now extinct. Once a living organism, this ammonite was turned to stone through petrification, a process that replaces organic matter into sediment and minerals over millions of years.
