These unique ancient stones are genuine fossilized coprolites, commonly known as fossilized animal dung, direct from the island of Madagascar.
Found thoughout the area of Mahajanga, these fossils can be traced back to the late Triassic time period (about 230 million years ago) when the island was teeming with ancient animal species now extinct.
These coprolites were turned to stone through petrification, a process that replaces organic matter with sediment and minerals over millions of years. Coprolites have played a pivital roll for researchers indentifying ancient mammal, reptile, and dinosaur species, and helping to understand their diets, diseases and behaviors.
