Native American War Shirts - A Part Of American History

Native American War ShirtsNative American war shirts are a very interesting part of American history. The tunic-like shirts were often made of buckskin, and sewn in a way to respect the natural shape of the animal. This was thought to preserve the animal’s power.

It was considered a badge of honor to wear a war shirt, and was a privilege granted to a warrior by tribal councils. The shirt was not worn into battle, but reserved for special ceremonies and tribal rituals. It served as a memorial of the battle, and symbolized a warrior’s acts of bravery.

War shirts were both simply and intricately designed. Painted designs of battles scenes, and stories of tribal mythology were often painted on the shirt. Items such as beading, feathers, animal tails, pieces of cloth and bullet cartridges, would be gathered at the battle site to decorate the shirt. Sometimes, human hair from an enemy scalp was also attached.

Today, war shirts are greatly appreciated for their beauty and design. They are great for southwestern decorating, and add the perfect touch to a rustic home or cabin. They look wonderful hanging on the wall in any room, or as part of a Native American collection.
