Navajo Rug & Blanket Weavers
Native American blankets especially Navajo blankets have an important part in American Indian culture. Wool blankets have been used as saddle blankets for generations and the heavier more course handwoven wool blankets have been saught after for use as wool rugs and runners.
Navajo weavers who perfected the art of weaving kept their families warm and clothed with their weavings until the days of the trading post on the American frontier. It was at that time that Indian weavings gave way to machine made blankets because of their warmth and availability. Navajo rugs offer a unique look at the work of the Navajo waevers in the late 1800's.
