Indian masks have been part of ceremonies for generations and are very popular today in the southwest because of the natural materials used and traditional craftsmanship. When you think about the many styles of ceremonial masks used by various tribes, it is fascinating to consider the history they demonstrate.
Still today masks of the Southwestern Indians use the elements of nature that all cultures love, with carved wood, tooled leather and natural stone ground clay setting the standard. Indian tribes used these types of masks during their ceremonies in the early 1800's.
